This research involved studies of the magnetic properties of multilayered magnetic films. Ultra high vacuum sputtering techniques were utilized to prepare the films. The physics of the Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) and multilayer exchange coupling was investigated by precise measurements of the GMR in both anisotropic magnetioresistance (AMR) states. It was found that the AMR affected the GMR by altering the electron mean free path. A Boltzmann equation approach was found ...

This grant provided for the purchase of an ultrahigh vacuum sputtering system for the preparation of high quality multilayered magnetic films and thin films. The system allows the preparation of continuous alloys with the use of three magnetron clusters and epitaxial multilayer films using ion beam sputtering. Initial tests of the quality of the films indicate that the films prepared in this system are comparable to those prepared by other ...

This research involves studies of the magnetic properties of high quality thin and multilayered magnetic films. Both ultra high vacuum sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy techniques are utilized to prepare the films. Electrical transport is the primary probe to measure the magnetic properties of the films. Of special interest has been the determination of the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy energies of epitaxial iron films and the transport properties ...

Pittsburgh once again proved to be an inviting city for magneticians. 1,118 participants registered for the 5th Joint MMM Intermag Conference. The 762 contributions were organized into 506 talks and 256 poster exhibits which demonstrated that we have out grown the Pittsburgh Hilton To accommodate the large number of posters in the space available required three poster sessions on three of the days. Magnetic recording still appears to fuel the ...

The research program focused on the growth and the magnetic properties of epitaxial iron films grown on GaAs/InAs alloy substrates. Pseudomorphic growth of magnetic films on semiconductor substrates provides the potential for tuning of the magnetic properties of thin film magnets by varying the lattice constant and the morphology of the growth surface; this type of research has both device and fundamental research applications. Our studies of Fe films grown ...

The growth properties and magnetic properties of iron films grown by molecular beam epitaxy were studied. The iron film growth was first studied by growing iron on iron whiskers. This work and previous work determined the growth parameters for nearly dislocation free growth. This information was then used to grow iron films on Gallium Arsenide/Indium Arsenide alloy substrates. As determined by electron diffraction, layer by layer growth was observed when ...
