Our accomplishments for the period of 15 December 97 - 14 December 00 can be summarized in five key areas. They are: (A) Morphology evolution of ion- irradiated Au(III); (B) Thermal relaxation of a sputter-roughened surface; (C) Energetic deposition of Cu on Cu(III); (D) Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations of mound formation, thermal relaxation, and energetic deposition; and (E) Hardware development for studies of energetic deposition with controlled energy ...

We have used Ultra High Vacuum Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (UHV- STM) to investigate the evolution of morphology on metal surfaces irradiated with energetic ion beams. Time-lapse images were used to observe the stability and decay of isolated islands and pits subsequent to the irradiation. We developed theoretical analytic models and Monte Carlo simulations to describe island decay. Key results are: (1) monolayer height islands and pits are formed in the ...

Energetic ions or neutrals (in the hyperthermal energy range) have been used in a number of thin film growth applications (e.g., sputtering and plasma deposition techniques, direct ion beam and ion-assisted deposition, etc.) . These involve both direct deposition of the film species with an ion beam, and deposition by some other method during simultaneous ion bombardment. Experiments and simulations have shown that energetic ions can lower the substrate temperature ...

We have investigated the interactions of hyperthermal (few to several hundred eV) atomic ions with metal surfaces, in particular the dynamics of electron transfer between the particle and surface. Progress is reported in the following areas: (1) construction of a time-of-flight spectrometer for measuring energy- and angle-resolved distributions of neutral and charged alkali atoms; (2) measurements of the magnitude and velocity-dependence of the neutralization probabilities for Li, Na, and K ...

Investigated are the interactions of hyperthermal (10-100 eV) and keV ions with clean and adsorbate-covered metal surfaces, with particular emphasis on ion-surface charge exchange processes. Nonadiabatic resonant charge transfer to hyperthermal energy K+ scattered from clean and adsorbate-covered Cu(001) and Cu(110) were observed. Very small coverages of alkali adsorbates (< or= 0.05 ML) dramatically increased the charge transfer rate. Classical trajectory calculation was used to determine the scattered K+ velocities, ...

The overall research program described in this report is to investigate the interactions of hyperthermal (10-100 eV) and keV ions with clean and adsorbate-covered metal surfaces. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of ion-surface charge exchange processes. Progress in instrumentation includes: completion of the general apparatus, the successful production of low phase- space alkali and noble gas beams ranging in energy from about 10 eV to several keV, completion ...

The overall research program described in this report is to investigate the interaction of low (keV) and hyperthermal (10-100 eV) ions with clean and adsorbate-covered metal surfaces; in particular, ion-surface charge exchange processes. We report on the operation of the UHV scattering apparatus for the ion scattering measurements, ongoing development and upgrade of the apparatus, the use of two ion scattering simulations which together cover the entire energy range of ...
