Results are presented from the final year of a 5-year program in research and development in hydrocarbon fuel handling and contaminant control, along with a statistical analysis of results from earlier tests performed to develop procedures for evaluating filter-separator elements, fuels, and fuel additives. The program included a large number of tests in a single-element filter-separator test loop and a variety of small-scale studies. A small coalescer device was developed ...

Single-element filter-separator tests were conducted to study the effects of fuel corrosion inhibitors on element performance in removing water and solid contaminants from jet fuel. Most of the tests were 'life tests' of 125 hr in which a fuel supply of about 12,000 gal was pumped through the element at 20 gpm in 8-hr cycles, with continuous injection of red iron oxide at a concentration of 0.33 mg/l in the ...

|
The accuracy of the Aeronautical Engine Laboratory (AEL) free water detector results was evaluated on samples on JP-5 fuel with controlled free water content, prepared in a 20-gpm pumping loop and in a batch-blending system. In the loop tests, AEL ratings were unaffected by fuel flow variables or sampling time but were affected by sample size and sampling method. Ratings on 500-ml line samples were about three times the amounts ...

Results are presented from 13 single-element life tests on filter-separator elements from a single manufacturer, using uninhibited JP-4 fuel contaminated with red iron oxide and filtered tap water. Ten tests were run using a continuous-solids procedure with injection of 0.33 mg/liter of red oxide over a 125-hr period, and three tests were run by the conventional 125-hr life test procedure of MIL-F-8901A, in which red iron oxide is injected at ...

A 15- to 60-gpm filter-separator test loop has been designed and built for research and development work on jet fuels, additive, and fuel handling equipment. Maximum flexibility has been provided in the loop and in the subsystems for blending and injecting additives, solid contaminants, and water. No materials that are harmful to the newer types of high-quality hydrocarbon fuels have been used in the fuel-wetted components of the loop, and ...
