BioSim (trademark) BG Non-Biological Aerosol Simulant 17 NOV 2004 11 pages
Authors:  David S. Alburty; Kelly L. Brown; Jennifer L. Dannehl; Andrew E. Page; Freeman Swank; Richard R. Thomas; MIDWEST RESEARCH INST KANSAS CITY MO
The full text of this report is available for sale.A non-biological simulants has been developed for use as a safe effective alternative to Bacillus globigii (Bg). The simulant consists of one-micron polystyrene carrier beads with an aerodynamic diameter similar to anthrax spores, with total genomic Bg DNA attached to the surface. The DNA attachment to the bead is robust enough to withstand aerosolization and collection processes, yet reacts in a PCR-based detector using existing analytical protocols. BioSim(TradeMark) Bg can ...

Development and Testing of a Novel Standard Particle for Performance Verification of Biodefense/Bioterrorism Detection Systems 19 NOV 2003 8 pages
Authors:  Kelly L. Brown; David S. Alburty; Jennifer L. Dannehl; Andrew E. Page; Robert C. Huebner; Freeman J. Swank; Mike F. Fischer; MIDWEST RESEARCH INST KANSAS CITY MO
The full text of this report is available for sale. This paper describes a novel simulant test particle that allows for the calibration of biodetection systems without causing safety concerns. Specifically, this test particle is a polystyrene sphere, of an aerodynamic diameter similar to that of Bacillus anthracis, with Bacillus globigii genomic DNA attached to the surface. The DNA attachment is strong enough to withstand aerosolization and collection by a SpinCon sampler, and yet weak enough to detach during the ...
