Abstract:
The enhancement of solid solubility limits of AlCo intermetallic compound, prepared by high-energy ball milling, has been studied. The powder mixtures consisted of Co-50 at% Al, Co-71.4 at% Al, Co-76.5 at% Al, and Co-81.8 at% Al, corresponding to AlCo, Al5Co2, Al13Co4, and Al9Co2, respectively. X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis showed that AlCo phase was formed during milling, and in Co-81.8 at% Al this phase was preceded by an amorphous phase. Solubility range of intermetallic compounds can be greatly improved by high energy ball- milling.
