Modeling of Hurricane Impacts, Interim Report 1

Authors: Dano Roelvink; Ad Reniers; Ap Van Dongeren; Dirk-Jan Walstra; UNESCO-THE INST FOR WATER EDUCATION DELFT (NETHERLANDS)
Abstract:
This first interim report describes the development of dune erosion algorithms based on an analysis of existing approaches; it describes the activities related to the ShoreCirc model required to make it suitable for modeling of the nearshore hydrodynamics during hurricanes and it describes a newly developed model for inner surfzone swash and overwash processes. Significant progress was made here and a set of Matlab routines providing much of the needed functionality is included for evaluation and testing. A novel approach for solving the time-varying wave action balance is applied where in contrast with existing surfbeat models which are averaged over directional and frequency spectrum the wave directionality is maintained which removes the need for a separate wave model to provide wave directions.
