Oxidation of Carbon Fibers and Fabrics.

Authors: I. M. K. ISMAIL; T. W. Owens; DAYTON UNIV OH RESEARCH INST
Abstract:
Oxidation kinetics of two carbon fibers, T-300 and VSB-32, and one fabric, WCA, were studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Structural changes accompanying the oxidation reactions in air at 390 - 650 C or in an oxygen plasma at about 40 C, were investigated. Oxidation of the T-300 fiber at 600 - 950 C is solely controlled by the diffusion of O(2) into the pores present underneath the surface. However, oxidation of the other two materials below 850 C was solely controlled by the chemical reactivity of the surfaces. Oxidation of the T-300 and WCA fiber developed micro- and meso-porosity. However, oxidation of the VSB-32 developed only macro-pores and pits at the external surface.
