Modeling the Interface Between a Respirator and the Human Face

Authors: Dino Piccione; E. T. Moyer Jr; DCS CORP ALEXANDRIA VA

Abstract: This report documents a multi-disciplined approach to the issue of modeling the interface between the respirator (protective mask) and human face. The modeling efforts encompass discomfort, digital modeling of mask surfaces, digital modeling of the human face, and finite element analysis. The FEA process was used to register the digital model of the mask seal onto the digital model of a face. The finite element modeling evaluated the boundary conditions to predict fit and discomfort.
