Abstract:
This paper includes four parts in addition to the introduction, each of which deals with one aspect of Korea's economic development. The introduction, beside examining Korea as a model, listing what is to follow, and explaining topic choice, is devoted mainly to brief presentations of the main issues and findings that are analyses in more detail in the subsequent parts of the paper. It is intended to provide readers with an overview of what follows. What follows is limited to four topics: Agriculture as a Lagging Sector(Part II) ; Labor Absorption (Part III); The Government and the Economy (Part IV); and Exports and Development Strategy (Part V). These four were chosen because each has had a major impact on contemporary development and should continue to have a major impact in the future. They were also chosen because they have extra- economic as well as economic significance, and should therefore relate to the work of the other scholars who are analyzing the political and social aspects of the South Korean model in companion papers.
