Abstract:
Polymer films are being considered for several insulator applications where they will operate at temperatures above ambient. Test equipment was developed for exposing polymer samples under stress to sulfur hexafluoride containing various amounts of water and Freon 113. Samples of polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, polyethersulfone, polyparabanic acid, and polyimide were exposed at temperatures from 70 to 160 exp O C for 2000 hours and were evaluated by visual examination, tensile tests, metallographic examination, and electrical breakdown tests.
