Large Scale Electromagnetic Computation on Nonlinear Optical Systems

Authors: J. V. Moloney; ARIZONA UNIV TUCSON DEPT OF MATHEMATICS
Abstract:
The award went towards the purchase of an ONYX2 Silicon Graphics rack system with an internal graphics engine and six 195MHZ CPUs. The significantly increased computing capacity resulting from the DUPIP award has enabled us to work on the following projects: (1) Structure Dependence of the Linewidth Enhancement Factor: A Full Microscopic Many-body Calculation; (2) High Speed Current Modulation of High Power MOPA Devices; (3) Critical Focusing-Induced Novel Light Guides in Air; and (4) New Classes of Vectorial Electromagnetic Light Bullets. New Projects being explored include: (1) Contact to the Envelope Theories when High Nonlinear Events Stretch the Validity of These Models; (2) Full Vectorial Situation when the Characteristics Spatial Scales Approach the Wavelength of Light and Temporal Scales Peach a Single or Hall Optical Cycle; and (3) Double Clad Fiber Amplifiers and Lasers for High Brightness Applications.
