Study of Wide Field of View Optical Systems Based on Animal Eyes

Authors: Duncan Moore; ROCHESTER UNIV NY INST OF OPTICS

Abstract: The study examines the compound eye and its potential role as a wide field of view optical system. A prototype system based on the apposition compound eye is designed and built. An alternative design based on the neural superposition compound eye is also presented. The effects of incorporating gradient index lenses into the system are also examined, as well as potential manufacturing methods.
