EFFECT OF INDUCED OCCLUSAL DISHARMONY ON STRESS.

Authors: Malcolm D. Jendresen; Ira L. Shannon; SCHOOL OF AEROSPACE MEDICINE BROOKS AFB TEX
Abstract:
This study was designed to ascertain whether or not a systemic stress reaction sufficient to elevate serum corticosteroid levels, in normal healthy adult males, would result from induced occlusal disharmony or interferences. Occlusal interferences were designed into cast gold inlays on selected premolars of 8 experimental subjects. The presence of gross occlusal interference in functional areas of mastication and deglutition did not produce significant stimulus to the adrenal cortex. The clinical significance of occlusal imperfections or interferences in many instances is predominantly academic in that a patient's adaptive capacity or tolerance level makes occlusal adjustment unnecessary unless local pathologic conditions are present and well-defined.
